Need help installing 3 Wireless Cameras on a linksys WRT54

I am installing the wireless IP cameras for the first time !

I am using 3 Vivotek IP6117 Wireless Cameras
Linksys Rangebooster WRT54 router

The software i am using is the Milestone Enterprise.

Can anyone help me configure this ! Also can someone tell me if its a 1000ft apartment complex that i want to monitor will this router and cameras be a feasible solution.

I'm not an expert on configuring a wireless network so I will leave that to ICUSecurity or someone else on the board. I am however a support engineer for Milestone, so any questions you have about your software I am happy to answer. What version of our software are you using? Basis, Basis+, Professional or Enterprise?

The setup is fairly simple.

Assign the router an IP address
Assign each camera an IP addres

As far as 1000 feet, if its NLOS (Non Line of Sight) then no, the stock rubber duckies will probably not be strong enough.

Can get you a better two antenna's rather eaisly, and cost effective.

Vivoteks should be supported under XPE 5.0 as long as you have installed the latest device pack, version 2.8. You can download it from the link below

- I can use any antennas for those wireless cameras or does it have be specific.

- Secondly i have a dynamic ip address so if i want to view from my home, what is the process ?
I have already registered with dyndns.org but i dont know how to configure it and configure my router so i can access the 3 cameras from my home.

Unfortunately it is not possible to use Dynamic DNS with our software. The reason for this is that you must specify the public IP address in the Image Server Administrator. You can use DynDNS, but as soon as your IP address changes, you would need to update it in the Image Server Administrator before it will work again remotely.

I have already placed a request with Product Management to allow EITHER an outside IP address OR a hostname to be entered in the current "Outside IP address" field. It would then be possible to use dynamic DNS with our software.

Hello - I'm totally new at this - I have absolutely no knowledge about what I need, where to buy it.....etc, and I don't know the protocol of this forum, so I don't want to step over boundaries. So, before I ask questions about this setup, and how a Linksys Router can be used as a part of a wireless camera setup, I need to ask if I may ask such questions.

First learn to hack the WRT54, google DD-WRT, you'll find tons of info on hacking this venerable wifi router. This will allow you more control over settings, allow you to setup repeaters if the one wifi router doesn't have enough range, allow you increase the default power settings. Alternatively, you can be lazy like me and buy them pre-hacked on ebay, just search dd-wrt on ebay. I actually paid less for a brand new hacked one than if I went into CC or BB to buy one. You'll also be able to setup a ddns account with a provider for a few bucks a month that will manage the ever changing IP address from your cable/DSL provider.

Then you have to understand how this TCP/IP works. To access the camera from an external IP, you will have to assign different port numbers to each camera. Most have 80 as a default, Then you can access the cameras using the DNS name and port number. Internally in the same network you can use different IP address, but from an external IP, like from home you will need to use port number. If you want to test from home, go to www.whatismyipaddress.com and it will tell you what your external IP is.
