Hi guys. I'm just after a few pointers/tips when installing an IP camera.
A mate of mine has bought a cam and is wanting to remotely monitor a building. He has a PC in the building he wants to monitor and one at home. They ofcourse both have internet connections. I've never installed an IP cam before but i'm in IT so should be able to pick it up fairly easily.
He doesnt have a static IP address so I will be using dyndns or another alternative.
What I want to know is, do you need to use Remote Desktop or terminal into the PC from the one at home or do all cams include software that will enable a user to see the camera through a web interface if they type the IP into a web browser?
You do not need to use Remote desktop if the camera has a built-in web server.
To view the camera form outside you have to setup DDNS, configure the routers/internet connections and setup the camera to work on the ports you just opened on the router, then discover (in most cameras by trial and error) the external port number since you need it even if you use DDNS.
The alternative is to buy a Y-cam Wireless IP Camera. It will configure your router/internet connection, open the necessary ports required and set its self up to work with your network (just enter your WEP or WPA key if using encrypted wireless) All you have to do is set the DDNS and access the camera's configuration to see what are the external parameters of the camera - without any guess work.
Now that's what I call full UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). _________________ www.y-cam.com Computer Shopper Magazine - Best Buy (Rated 5 Star) Purchase On-line
