|
|
Hi,
I get this message "Not connected" when I try to use XProtect Smart client from any of the computers in my workplace. However the software works fine on my and my coworker's personal machines.
We have checked all the minimum requirements of the software and all are complied with. We have tried putting the computers outside the firewall and it still doesnt work. We put our personal machines behind the firewall and it works! We have the same antivirus with same settings on all the machines, including our personal machines.
Attached are images of the software working on my machine and not working on another.
Please help![/img]

First, what version of software are you running? You can find the version and service release letter from the About dialog in the Administrator. The guide below will show you exactly where it is.
http://www.milestonesys.com/?cid=357&newsId=91
Just to clarify...
- On your two personal PC's, the Smart Client works inside, and outside the network that the server is on
- All other PC's do not work whether inside or outside the network
Is this correct? If so, then it means the Milestone software is configured properly, but there is something blocking the ActiveX controls in the software from reaching out to pull streams from the server. Maybe the non-personal PC's are locked down with some AD policy or the software firewall is more strict on them? _________________ Support Engineer

Hi pcloo74,
In order to enable NAT (users coming in from the WAN), you must check the box called "Enable Outside Access" in the Image Server Administrator on the XProtect server. This enables you to fill out the outside IP and outside Port fields.
The Outside IP/Port field will be the public IP address of the network the server is on. Whatever IP you enter here is the address that the camera elements of the client will attempt to connect to, to pull video from the server.
Unfortunately right now it is not possible to enter a hostname in this field, so DDNS is not fully supported on the client side. There is a work-around which I've tested and verified though...
Open C:\Program Files\MIlestone\Milestone Surveillance\Imageserver.ini
The file is structured in XML style
Find the "Outside IP" field and enter your dyndns.org hostname
Make sure that "Outside Access" is enabed as well, and save changes.
Restart the "Milestone ImageServer" service
You should now be able to login using the DDNS name, even if your DHCP assigned address changes. However, any time you open then close the Image Server Administrator, you will need to do this again as the hostname doesn't fit the format of an IP address and will be reset to 0.0.0.0.
Now, even if you don't have outside access enabled, you should still be able to at least get to the Image Server Start Page where you download and install the Smart Client. If you still cannot get to this page from the WAN, then the problem is either in your port-forwarding rules in your firewall, or perhaps the Windows Firewall on your server. _________________ Support Engineer

Hi Expert,
Thanks for your fast reply, .
In C:\Program Files\MIlestone\Milestone Surveillance\Imageserver.ini
i set the "Outside IP" field by dyndns.org hostname
how about the "outside port" ? is it set to 84?

The outside port will be the same as the engine (image server port). The only time these will differ is if you need to perform port-translation at the router so that from the outside you connect to http://my.domain.com:84 and your router forwards to 111.222.333.444:80 or some other port. Usually this is used if you need to access several cameras at once over a WAN connection when the camera HTTP ports cannot be changed from 80. _________________ Support Engineer

Cute, one to remember - Ta Josh!
One other way (my preferred method) is to set up a VPN to access the Milestone server. I guess that will depend on your network priveledges and complexity but it's fairly straight forward.

Glad you like it Mr. Sots
Yes, VPN is certainly the preferred method, and I'm sure there are some free software-based VPN solutions out there. The Imageserver.ini hack is not recommended, but if you absolutely must have uninterrupted DDNS access and are uncomfortable with VPN's, it's an option _________________ Support Engineer

Windows XP can be configured pretty easilly to act as a VPN server, just make sure you're well firewalled!

Hi all Expert,

Look like, the web browser much limited ....
I need to log as Smart Client through Dynamic IP
I know by setting up a VPN server, can help Smart Client to log in.
