|

Hi,
I tried to upgrade an Axis 2100 from version 2.33 to 2.47 via FTP. At the ftp prompt everything looked fine and the camera restarted. However, I was not able to re-open an ftp session after the restart. My old root password did not work anymore and neither did the default password "pass".
After waiting some more time I decided to power cycled the camera. Bad move. Now when I power it up the status light and the network light are both immediately solid red no matter what. Trying to reset it to factory defaults by holding down the little hidden button doesn't work. Arrrrrrgh.
I assume the internal linux OS is corrupted and I have no idea how to revive this camera. Don’t tell me I created a paperweight. Does anyone know how I can establish communication with the camera and get it to accept the binary file that holds the OS?
Cheers,
Ingo

In technical terms, what you created is called a "brick". There is really nothing you can do easily. The firmware is corrupt, the camera is dead. If you had a way to remove the eprom chip and put it in a programmer you could copy someone elses chip to it and all will be well. But you are talking about a very old camera design, probably not worth the effort. Maybe use it as a dummy decoy camera.
That is one of the easiest cameras to hack though, not something you want to use for commercial security. Google Axis 2100 hack and you'll see plenty of articles on hacking that puppy and not for good either. But you need it working before someone can hack it so in a sense, you have a very secure camera now.
I thought about buying one of those since it can dial out using a modem and where I want to use it I don't have internet access.
