I am using an IP camera to track populations of foxes, the problem is that I am unable to get power to the area where the foxes live. Are there solutions that would allow me to have a portable recording solution that required very little power? Would it be possible to record to a USB flash drive?

Thanks

Hello,

I have not seen a portable IP Camera with a built-in recording solution. That doesn't mean theres not a solution out there for your though Wink

I have seen some companies that build custom cameras that might suite your needs. Considering it would be a custom camera you might be looking at a bit of money however.

If you are interested, I can try to dig up those companies I found and you can try contacting them.

Let me know!

I have Sanyo WB4000 cams that I power using a solar panel/12V battery. They also have slot for PCMCIA card that you can use for additional storage. Might even sell one of my spares...

We have done a few projects like this for various groups. The most applicable was for an endagered species of bird that an organization wanted to watch remotly durring nesting and breeding.

You can view the images and camera rig here:

This application required a cellular internet connection and solar power, due to its remote location and need to be portable. Feel free to contact me you would like some help with your project.

Try Mobotix, their M12 camera uses only 3W, so you could get like a motorcycle battery and a cheap power inverter and power the camera for a good while, maybe days. Also, get a 32GB micro SD card to store the images. Since all the NVR software is built into the camera, you don't anything else. If you need more storage, get a NAS, like a WD My Book World Edition 1TB, costs about $150-200 and also doesn't use that much power. The Mobotix can write to it, or the SD card, not both at the same time. I think for most cases, the 32GB card will last you a few days and be comperable to battery life.

what is you budget?

you could get solar panel, 12v UPS gel batteries, charge controller, and camera that that have internal SD card. There are quite a few of those on market. Panasonic, Ganz/IPX, and so on.
Or you can get analog cams with portable DVR (have seen a lot of them on ebay for less then $100)

Dont forget IR illuminator, they run on 12V.

I would go with network cams, most of them have alarm input, which you could use to setup motion detection (PIR) trigger driven recording.

And if budget is not an issue.. You could setup these
http://www.ubnt.com/ the Nano Station (bridge mod)
so, during sunny day (solar panel), you could use them to remote log on to the station.

other post that might be useful to you

If you are on a budget. I can suggest a ~$250 solution. If you follow this instructable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Solar-Powered-Security-System it's an easy solution to set up an solar powered camera. The camera featured also comes with a 4GB SD card which would be good enough for 24 hours of video.
