I'm planning to put a camera outside my front door to monitor people entering and exiting. Through google I've seen several comments that you need a high res (800x600 +) to get facial details. To me this seems an odd requirement. Wouldn't that depend on the distance from the camera to the target? If the distance is about 4 feet, is 640x480 sufficient?

I'm no expert but in my limited experience, I think it would take much less than that. (320ishx whatever)

But this of course is to see if it's your friend, a stranger, your mom, etc. This wouldn't be high detail enough to take to a police station and identify a stranger but it would be enough to verify that it was in fact someone already identified. Especially if at that close of a range.

I agree with ebone...

If you are only 4 feet away, 640x480 will do fine. You could get away with 320x240 as well. A lot of IP cameras will go up to 640x480 with the loss of frames per second. If you don't mind getting about 15 to 25 fps (which I bet you don't) you could get a low end camera that will work fine for you.

Let me know if you need any suggestions.
