I'm thinking of buying the Linksys WVC200. Does anyone have any good or bad reviews on this camera?

Also, does anyone know...
How good is the zoom?
How far away does the motion detection work?
How good is the IR feature?

Hey. I posted one review of this cam here at this site. I Have 4 of them here. The zoom is 2X and digital. I haven't played with the motion detection yet. The cam is 2 lux. I haven't messed with IR at all. Think it needs an IR source, right?
Ask away or tell me what you wish, I'll give it a try.
I have set up web access and a temp web account for each, but not ready to post that yet.
I can tell you that a simple childs nitelite is more than adequate to see if "little billy" is laying down or up to mischief. No, you would NOT be able to see what color his legos are in low lite.
I still think great cam for the price.
Let me know.

Have used the Linksys WVC54G for about 18 months and just purchased the WVC200 as a second camera, I'm really happy with the WVC54G and use it to remote monitor the home's temperture via the web -

THOUGHTS ON WVC200
In general I've been somewhat disappointed with the new camera, the colors are not true especially the green/grays. You have to use a login to view the camera even from within your own network. The antenna seems very senstive to it's direction, and if it's not just right the viewing is very slow. The 2x was a nice surprise though. I have not used the motion detection yet. Not that's it's a bad camera for the price, I just did not see much improvement over the WVC54G.

VIEWING via IE over WEB
I have yet to get this camera to be available over a web address. I have two services monitoring my IP address, I've opened a new port on my router (WRT54G) and installed the ActiveX control. I have no trouble viewing the WVC54G on the same network.

ANY help with getting the camera to work via a web IP would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance - Cozimoto

If you CANNOT find the cam by internet,
I would make sure that a different port number is used for the wvc200 (so they are not using the same port.
Make sure you scroll down on the camera setting page and that the port settings match.
If you CAN find the cam by internet, but cannot view, make the sight a trusted site, and make sure your address reads something like this:
http://mrcadman.gotdns.com:10155
This would have the port number attached to the rear of the address.
When this isn't there, browsers assume port 80.

thanks for the response mrcadman ......

I do have a separate port setup on each camera and each camera has it's own IP address on my network, each camera also has it's corresponding port forwarded on my router. I have two services monitoring my IP address (because I found the ourlinksys one to be a little flakey) and the older camera comes up using both services. I even disabled the working port camera and used that port with the WVC200 just for troubleshooting. All hardware firmware is up to date.

I had not tried the "trusted site" but the results were the same.

One interesting thing is that I get "The page cannot be displayed" on first attempt, when I hit refresh the IE Windows flag waves endlessly, that my be the norm, I don't know.

I'm wondering if the WVC200 has a second (undocumented?) port that needs to be forwarded? Probably have to spend an hour with Linksys and get nowhere, ugh!

Yea ........

I'd missed setting the port in the Options menu under the motion detection emails, what a place to hide that important info.

Thanks for the help.

If anyone does have screenshots, send me a PM. I would like to post them on the website for others to view.

Also, I find http://www.provantage has fairly cheap price IP cameras - I think shipping costs might be a bit though - look into it Wink

I bought them from towermicro on ebay. I think they had a pricing error or needed quick cash. Everybody else was selling theirs from 279 to 299.
They listed 50 of them at 199 so i bought one to test, then three more 1 hour after it arrived. He yanked them after selling 10. I suspect a bulk purchase followed mine. Just lucky i guess.

Wes, I am very ill right now, but will try to send a screen shot later, ok?

Greatings,
I'm thinking of buying the Linksys WVC200 to keep an eye on my little one, I've never had or used an IP camera before. Do you recommend this camera? my other alternatives are the D-Link DCS-5300W and the Panasonic BL-C30A, which do you think would be the best buy?
Thanks.

potp-

I've posted my original thoughts earlier on in the string, and I've done more playing with the settings. The big negative to me is still the none true colors, presumably because it is infra red compatible. I have not tried this camera indoors but would expect the same thing there. I hope this is something Linksys can adjust with a firmware update, it has a B&W setting so why not an IR setting.

Other than that I'm happier with the camera than when first received, but it took a while adjusting the settings to get there.

I'd do a google query for text strings in the URL to catch the other two models in use somewhere on the web.

Also, I found this to be very interesting:

http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/23252

It appears you COULD void the warranty, and make the camera work with the activeX plugin for firefox.

That is interesting...

You can also get a Firefox plugin that allows you to run Internet Explorer within FireFox. This allows you to run ActiveX cameras. I think you still need to have Internet Explorer installed though so I wouldn't consider it a complete workaround.
