sorry, had to chime in on this one.

a 1" piece of metal can destroy it if it right up against the antenna, especially if it is a directional antenna.

Wireless technology is nothing new, your wireless network stuff runs on 3 different ranges, 900mhz, 2.4mghz and 5.8mghz, so essentially you are looking at wireless as a RF (radio frequency). think of it as light, if you shine a flashlight on the wall and put a piece of 1" metal in front of it, the area that is blocked cannot receive the light, same with wireless. Substances such as wood and glass affect the signal quality but do not diminish it like metal does. This is why metal would be used as a reflector to project the signal somewhere.
dish antenna's are made out of metal, microwave antenna's made out metal, all to help with the reflecting of the signal.
I made a home outdoor wireless network but i am amplifying my signal by using a directional antenna sending the signal to my camera and i put a directional antenna on my camera to receive the signal and send th signal right back. Quality is good, and i'm stretching it 450' plus from my AP to my camera, i will take a picture of what my signal is going through just to give you an idea. Check out my cam as it is today:

Didn't mean to throw this out there but felt it needed explaining in some terms.
