I have a Sony SNC-RZ50 camera and I'm trying to use it via a SMC8014 Cable Modem through Time Warner Cable Service.

Some background info:
- I have a static IP for the cable modem.
- The camera is the only thing that will be using the cable modem.
- I can access the camera when I connect my laptop to the modem and view the camera on its internal LAN address, but when I assign it the outside address it doesn't work. (Even after I disconnect the laptop and the camera is the only thing on the modem)
- I have also tried port forwarding on different ports.
- I can ping the external IP and get a good response.

What am I missing?

We think the problem is your port mapping! because you can connect your camera in local network! and you can ping your cable modem 's external ip address! You need set the gateway of SNC-RZ50 to cable modem 's internal ip address! and these two internal ip address must be in the same ip segment! network mask is 255.255.255.0 .

SNC-RZ50 is a h264 ip camera, the following software can get the h264 stream from this ip camera directly!

PInging the external IP doesn't mean anything, it's just your modem/router responding.

You need to setup your camera to have a fixed IP address in the range of your router's subnet. Meaning if it's assigned 192.168.1.50 by DHCP, as an example, it would be a safe bet to make it a static IP of 192.168.1.100. Then in your firewall section of your modem/router, set that IP address and port 80 to accessible from outside.

Then you can go to your external static IP address you have and connect to the camera. If you are not sure that you have the correct external IP address, go to a website like whatsmyip.com and it will tell you.
