All I want to do is record to a network drive, feeds from multiple cameras.
Thoughts? Is there an ip standard or do most companies use proprietary software?

There's plenty of VMS (video management software) out there, so of it super expensive like from Milestone, some super cheap from BlueIris, H264Soft and most will work with Panasonic cameras. There is no standard, you have to make sure you camera works with the software you like, but just about all let you download a demo version of the software.

There are only a small handful of cameras that write directly to a NAS, like Mobotix, IQinVision on the high end, and Vivotek on the low end.

Technically, you can have your Panny's FTP video to your NAS as most NAS devices have FTP capabilities. It will just be a collection of video files and you would use Panasonic software to view them.
