Greetings to all forum members.

I've been trying unsuccessfully to set up an Axis 223M for months and I've returned to the task today. The camera is wired (PoE), and the router is a Billion 7800N.

Question 1: can any forum members recommend a comprehensive, step-by-step manual outlining the entire process of setting up a network camera, especially including the numerous settings associated with motion detection triggering, SMS alerts, etc. (The Axis manuals are, in my opinion, quite unhelpful...)

Question 2: Where I'm stuck at present is in the Event Servers section where I have to Add TCP information - Network address (host name or IP address), and Port number. (A newcomer like myself has no idea whether this information should be requested from my ISP, or, as seems to be the case, from the Router manual... In any case, I haven't been able to find any reference to a TCP server number.)

Given the lack of comprehensive information, I'm amazed that anyone ever manages to work this stuff out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Geoff

You ask if there's a step by step guide, probably came with the camera, but they all assume you have basic understanding of networking and tcp/ip (ftp, smtp, firewalls, etc). This is the main reason many security companies refuse to go with ip cameras and stick to analog cctv. You are very lucky, Axis is about easy as it gets to setup.

Dont' really even know what you are trying to do with event servers. If you are adding an FTP server, you'll need to know where the FTP server is, your network, someone elses network, what path you want to ftp to, if it's passive mode or not, what port number if not 21 and most importantly, your username and password..

If you are FTP'ing to your ISP's server, then you need to get the address to ftp to, like ftpmysite.verizon.net (if you use Verizon DSL and their FTP site) from your ISP. Typically FTP port is 21, can be different, but rare. Upload path you can leave blank unless you want to put the images in a specific directory. I always set passive mode. Click test and if you did it right, it will FTP a file. Of course you will need to know how to connect to your FTP site to see if it got there. I use Filezilla to connect to FTP sites, free and does a great job.

Keep in mind that Axis does not record video via FTP, only still images. If you want to record video, i would recomend BlueIris software, about $50 for unlimited cameras. This way you can record camera video on your PC and more importantly, view it later. It's easier to use than the in camera software.

Buellwinkle, thanks for the BlueIris tip. It looks good and I'm going to give it a try.

Cheers,
Geoff

Hi Buellwinkle,

I've installed BlueIris but can't get it to see my camera. I'm getting Error: 8000274d (OnConnect: 10061), block 0.

I can get the program to recognise a Logitech USB webcam but not the Axis.

Any suggestions?

Geoff
