As a hobby project, I want to set up an IP security camera to stream to my web server. The streams should be stored on the server, and I want to set up a web application to let me browse through the recorded video - either streaming using Flash or HTML5, or just by downloading chunks of video as video files.

Although not very experienced with video, I am comfortable with the whole web part of the project. The 'stream video from camera and record on server' part is on the other hand entirely new to me.

An important issue regarding the acitivity/non-activity in front of the camera. I would like the server to record the stream when the movement sensor turns the camera on, and the shut of the recording when runnning idle ie. without movement. I know this is partly solved eith a move sensitive camera, but how about the server and the stream transfer?

Does anyone have any recommendations on resources I will find interesting, interesting software that might be relevant, best practices, recommended cameras (or what technologies the cameras must support) etc.?
