|
|
Hi All,
since this took me a while to figure out, I figured I would share my success!
I recently acquired a Foscam FI8918W to monitor the backyard when the kids are down there, and it will be moved when we go away so I can monitor the main living area.
I decided on the FI8918W since it was under $100 Australian and it supported being encapsulated via an ASX stream.
After getting the basics going I hit a stumbling block, I could get MP12 to tap into the stream but there was a compatibility issue with the W7 foundation codecs and the type of MJPG stream coming from the camera. VLC worked first time however!
If VLC works for you then great, all you need is a single line text file that has the ASX extension as follows:
http://ipcam_url/videostream.asf?user=username&pwd=password
W7MP or W7MC didn't work however, they would tap the stream but just show blackness. Two codec packs and two reboots later, I still had no luck.
I was pretty dismayed, after all I was trying to make it super wife-friendly so I just wanted to add a "streamed tv channel" to Windows Meda Centre.
The solution was mostly simple - once I found it!
I discovered the "Generic DirectShow source filter for network IP video cameras" from Unreal Media Server: http://www.umediaserver.net/umediaserver/download.html
I installed the correct one for my system (64bit or 32 bit) and rebooted, then I created a single line ASX file like above except using the parameters as documented in the TXT file within the ZIPs
IPCAM://Url=<xxx>&Fps=<xxx>&Auth=<xxx>&Username=<xxx>&Password=<xxx>
And it worked!!
The processing only happens when the media stream is launched, it happens on the computer viewing the stream.
To get it working with Windows Media Player 12, just double click the .ASX file you have created
To get it working with Windows Media Centre, put the file in one of your monitored "videos" directories and then it will show as a "video" which you can play.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Congrats on your sucess. Why would you want to do this instead of watching the stream on a web browser? _________________ For network camera articles and reviews, visit my blog at http://ipcamnetwork.wordpress.com

Hi Buellwinkle, I really just wanted it as simple as possible to run on the TV whilst Windows Media Centre was running.
So:
- No mouse needed
- No window changing
- No configuration

As i cannot get mine to work in Windows 7 Media Center...
I installed the Generic DirectShow source filter for network IP video cameras but i might need some more codecs?
Im running Windows 7 Ulitmate but i get the error the file vcannot be played though when im access my Foscam with Chrome it works fine.

I had tried other cameras from Cisco and such and they were all good for the price. I was blown away though by the fact that for the same price range I not only got a security camera but this one has features that others do not have as far as hardware goes. Namely it has pan/tilt and night vision IR LEDs and can really see well in complete darkness of a whole room! Other cameras were simply a great camera but did not move so adjusting where it was pointed was difficult and could not see a whole room. I can remotely move the camera around (no zoom though which is the only bad point) from my PC and it has other CGI script function which I got from the Foscam support people to imbed the video and/or single frames into a web page.
It should be noted that this is better hardware-feature-wise as the software is overly simple in many ways and does require some knowledge of DDNS and port forwarding for over the internet viewing. Other software packages such as those from Cisco/Linksys are much more robust and offer simple setups. The Foscam software does a great job with everything you would expect it to have including setting up logins and limited controls for multiple users and stuff but you need to know a little bit about what you are doing first.
Foscam FI8918W Review
Overall this is the best camera for the price hardware-wise. If you are looking for something overly simple to setup and get all the features handed to you this is not for you. You will however get everything you need and want (except zoom and RTSP for mobile streaming) with camera. | Really helpfull for this topic.... NOT!.....

Well, i think that the problem is my coutry : i'm in France.
I retry the access throught a proxy in another coutry and now, it's ok.
I go immediatly test the codecs.
