|

How do you set up an IP camera to record video directly to a NAS on your LAN without any computer system being switched on? In addition to it capturing images to remote server on the web? Is it possible to do this and if so what would you specify as the network path?
If you have an IP Camera to NAS set up I just wonder what camera you have and which NAS?
As the moment the two IP Cameras that interest me the most are the Axis M1031-W and the Panasonic BB-HCM511. I am torn between those two. I really need ability to also record direct to NAS though.
Cheers,
John

We have Mobotix cameras that are designed from the ground up to write to NAS, meaning the NVR logic is built in like storage limits so you can set a quota for a camera and when it exceeds it, it deletes the oldest events to make room for the new. Also their in camera software has the ability to play back events and their free PC software, should you choose to use a PC, has software for enhanced playback and monitoring of multiple cameras but we leave our PC off until we need to view events. This is Mobotix's value proposition along with the best image quality in the industry. You can have as many NAS devices you want, one per camera or 20 cameras per NAS.
I have never seen another brand of camera's do this but just about all will let you FTP, so you can have it FTP to an FTP server and most NAS devices have this built in. Of course, there will be no management of space like Mobotix so you will have to manually delete old events so you don't run out of space and you will have to manually FTP to the NAS and pull off video to your PC to view them as files. Lastly, the Axis M1031-W will only FTP still images, JPEGS, not video, no H264 or MPEG.

Check out the QNAP and Synology NAS devices. Both have surveillance software baked in. I like the Synology the best, it's worked well for me.

Cisco/Linksys has some camera's that will do this, take a peek at some of our reviews on the WVC80N and WVC210, these 2 cams have WRITE TO NAS directly out of the box and can record 24/7 to a NAS, or you can also have it trigger motion detection and write to NAS that way
I have several of these setup to record 24/7 to my HP Home Server and then have an application that removes AVI's older than 10 days so my folder never fills up, it hovers right about 100 gig to store 10 days of video.
You can see more about how we do some of these things with our IP cams at http://www.MyHomeServer.com
