CCTV are dumb analog cameras, they need to connect via power and video cables to a DVR to do anything. IP cameras have a web server built in that does a lot of the functions like send email alerts, ftp, remote view the camera all without having to have a DVR. The most common reason people chose IP over CCTV is resolution. A typical CCTV system is VGA mode, or 640x480 and the number of lines of resolution is between 420 to 520 and is creeping up slowly. IP can be anwhere from VGA resolution to 16 mega pixels. So you can cover more area with a megapixel camera than with a CCTV or VGA camera. So while these cameras are expensive, sometimes they do the job of several CCTV cameras. Another reason is WiFi connectivity on the lower end.

IP cameras do require knowledge of networking, routers, switches and such and are not as easy or plug and play as CCTV.

Prices range from cheap unbranded camreas on ebay at $80 to to very sophisticated cameras for thousands of dollars.
