I personally chose BlueIris, does a good job for me with a mix of Axis, ACTi, Foscam, Cellvision cameras. It costs $50. They also have an optional component called TrackIt which is motion tracking software for PTZ cameras.

Recently, in order to compete in price, Milestone came out with a lower cost version of Xprotect called Essential. Comes out to $50/camera for the license, not bad for a commercial product.

I just tested BlueIris and the picture was not very smooth moving.
I mean like jumping.
I took up the framerate to max but it did not help.
Is BlueIris like that or can I do something about it?

I don't think you'll find network camera software that does that (puts multiple cams into the same recording). CastleKeeper2 (see sig) will run recordings from a group in sync, so you can move, say, cam1 to noon, and press a button, and all recordings from other cams in the group jump to the same time (and play). You can even fast-fwd (or rewind) and they can stay in sync, or you can ffwd one, and then when you have a spot to see from all angles, sync again and the rest join in. CK2 plays as smooth as your camera can be. Not all cams are. My smoothest is an Axis 207w. Perfect 30 fps +/- not-even-noticeable, 25 at night.

Just email support, Ken is pretty responsive. For some reasons my cheap Axis does this, but my megapixel Acti and my fioscam work perfectly. I'll probably sell the Axis and replace with Acti, about the same price but megapixel and changeable lens and a lot better image at night.

what CPU do you have, how much RAM.. it need dual core.. I use to use on P4 but it was to much for it.. Blue Iris does require more resources then you would expect..

I'm running BlueIris with 4 megpixel cameras, 2 VGA cameras on a Zotax Zbox with an Atom 330 dual core processor with NVidia ION Cuda graphics processor and it's working great for me. According to Ken at BlueIris, it's more of the graphic processor than CPU power. Of course if you tried to run 16 megapixel cameras with h.264, this would not be the system for you.
