This forum is more focused on network cameras which differ from what you have which are analog cameras. Think of a network camera as a computer with a camera, it can accessed from anywhere on the internet. Analog cameras are very simple and relay video from the sensor back to a DVR or VCR as you have. Some newer DVR's do have the ability to view cameras remotely but my guess is that if you still use tapes, it's too old to even have this feature. So it may be best to start over, one camera at a time until you learn what you need. The advantage of network cameras is they can have much higher resolution than analog cameras, the image quality can be better and the easy of connectivity with either WiFi or powered through an ethernet cable (PoE).
Take a look at my blog, I have reviews on cameras in all price ranges. If you can share with us the size of the area, if it's lit 24/7, if you want to use invisible IR light or have lesser expensive motion detect lights and about what your budget is and what you goals are, for example, do you want be able to identify someone's face or just activity monitoring. Also, if you want to view the cameras remotely, what speed internet connection you have in your garage and at home. You can go to one of the speed test websites to see what your upload & download speeds are like speednet or speakeasy. _________________ For network camera articles and reviews, visit my blog at http://ipcamnetwork.wordpress.com

I too have a garage (but on my property) with high performance classic cars (427 ci 671 supercharged) and several rental garages for classic car people. I have mega pixel IP cameras setup outside the garages to catch anything that comes onto the property from all angles. I can watch any of the video feeds from anywhere's in the world where I can get access to the internet. It was great watching my home property in HD video while I was in Colombia S.A. for short period of time.
Anyway, buellwinkle offered great information above. Unless my eyes skipped over some of his text, I will mention you will need to have some form of access to the internet at the garage location which I understand to be at a remote location away from home. What you need to do is one of the following: 1) Have your telephone comapny run a line for DSL to your garage, 2) Have your cable company run cable to the garage and have a data plan for the cable, 3) If there are GOOD neighbors NEARBY that run wireless, make a deal with them to allow you to setup several wirless IP cams and have the good neighbor setup access on their wireless router for your cameras.

By the way, where are you located? I'm in New Jersey and have a boat load of good panasonic VGA IP cameras that I recently took out of action since I upgraded to megapixel HDTV IP network cameras. The cameras have seen 24x7 x years of use but still work great. I will be happy to help out another car guy. If you can get broadband access to your garage, I'll work with out to setup a "starter IP camera system" free. If you like it, I'm sure you will want to upgrade to newer megapixel cameras and expand to provide a complete IP camera solution for security.
