I purchased a Sony RZ50N from a place that is big on the ONSSI stuff. I was about to buy either the SMB or the SOHO version, but decided to look around first. Which brings me to this forum, finding the free one camera license for Xprotect, and finally this very post.
What I find interesting is that they are almost identical products. (Save for the logos and a few very minor differences, they are identical.)
The primary difference being that I was going to spend $500 for my one IP camera and ended up spending $0.
Mind you, this is not a complaint in the slightest!

But I am terribly curious about the similarity of the products and seemingly total dissimilarity of the manufacturers of the products.

Why are they the same, yet not?

As a side note, I have been using Xprotect for about 3 months now. I love it!
Thank you to whomever was so kind as to allow me to use this product drop-dead FREE. Awesome!

Well it is very simple, Milestone has resellers of their software and some pay extra to brand it in their name. I talked to ONSSI and they mentioned there are differences in the software but he didn't elaborate Wink

I talk to Milestone frequently and both their techincal support and sales stuff are very knowledgable. Their software is also very easy to use and reliable. That is why I increased their presence on the website because I feel their software can really benefit our visitors.

Try out the demo and let me know what you think Smile

If you mean try the ONSSI demo, I already did. For a few months even.
If you mean try the Milestone demo, why, when I have only one camera and the license was free? (no demo required. It's the real deal!)

In fact, I have tried almost every software I found.
The Milestone XProtect is the best by far. I even demoed Sony's Real Shot Manager. It's crazy cumbersome for just one camera.

My only complaint about XProtect worthy enough to post here is the monitor screen:
I want just one pane, but I want to be able to "drive" the camera and not have the image expanded to the crazy high resolution that my desktop is running at (1x1)
To make the image look even close to normal, I have to select 2x2. Then I have 2 dead panes and two panes that are identical, one of which is used for moving the camera.
It's just bizarre, IMHO.

I want just one resizable window that does not INSIST on being full-screen and make the PTZ controls embedded in the same pane as the image.

I suppose not a lot of folks are using this for single camera setups, so I can see why it is the way it is, but still... some provision for the psycho single cam user would be sweet!

I agree, it's a bit of a bizarre for a one-camera setup. I don't know if you've tried the Remote Client which comes with Professional yet, but you can minimize the monitor app, then open an IE browser and navigate to http://localhost to access the Remote Client. You would be able to create a 1x1 view for your camera and PTZ within the view. You'll just need to create a user in Image Server Administrator first, if you haven't done so already.

Or you could fill the three "spare" camera windows with web pages or graphics...!
