Types of video servers available for surveillance

Hi All,

Its been quite some time since I have been viewing this forum. I just thought I could start a discussion.

I am an engineer by education. I am researching on video servers and encoders in surveillance . Based on my study so far , I have classified the market under these headings . I would welcome your suggestions.


By Compression: Mpeg and Mjpeg
By channels : single channel and multi channel
By streaming : unicast and multicast
By Connectivity : wired LAN and wireless LAN conectivity to network .


If you can classify further or add some more, it could result in a good discussion topic for all of us .

I would also add in IO inputs/outputs for alarm based recording. Also, I would add in video resolution and frames per second (ex. 704x480 @ 30fps or 352x240 @ 30fps)

From the installation point of view, I would add form factor (actual dimensions), for some applications this is critical, then you have to fit in enclosure or using a NEMA box or something. Later on those create problems. Then whether is it POE capable.

Most of the time you require a splitter to go with POE, but if it has builtin POE then you can just use a Switch that can provide you data and power.
