I have noticed ip cameras have two different types of zooms, optical and digital. I will be installing a camera in a ceiling corner of a room. The camera needs to pan/tilt but it also needs to have a great zoom.

I'm sorry if this an easy question, I'm still very new to these security cameras. What is the difference between Optical Zoom and Digital Zoom?

Optical Zoom is the better of the two. It is when the zoom is created by adjusting the lens. Usually this is clearer and cleaner than Digital Zoom.. Digital Zoom is when the camera crops a lower resolution image and then resizes it for your current screen size, giving the illusion of zoom. This usually looks pretty bad..And in most cases, is practically worthless. Although, there are times where you may find that even a lousy resolution digital zoom image gives a better view than something that is too far away to see properly otherwise.
