You need to ask the ISP for a 'fixed IP address' provision. If they give you a fixed IP address for the premises this will make it a lot easier for the business owner to find his DVR from wherever he is.

You don't say what brand of DVR you are working with?

Typically the DVR will have a network port to enable it to connect to the site's Local Area Network (LAN) - so that local viewers can see it on their PCs on the network.

To enable it to be viewed ffrom the internet outside you'll need to install a router. This will connect to the ISPs broadband provision and manage connections from outside to the router i.e. it'll ensure that only authorised external users can login, and that video is only then sent outwards to them.

Typically you don't need an expensive router - something like Netgear's 834 is usually fine (NB that's an ADSL modem/router, different models apply if you're using cable broadband, or if you already have the modem and just need a router).

Once you have the DVR network connected to the router and the router connected to the broadband provision you will then need information from the ISP to set the internet or Wide Area Network (WAN) portion of the router up, and information from the DVR manufacturer to set up the router correctly to allow two-way traffic through it to and from the DVR. Usually some adjustments to the firewall rules and port forwarding setup.

Just a general note on this configuration worth bearing in mind when talking to ISPs, you will be using the DVR effectively as a server - to upload video via the web to the site owner. Most broadband is sold on the merits of its downlink speed, therefore it is always worth checking that the package that you sign up for has a decent upload speed.

Good Luck.
