I need to set up a surveillance system in my retail store. I need to watch the cash registers in two separate areas. Each desk is about 30 feet long and has 2 cash registers.

The only requirements I have are:
Cameras must be IP and use PoE.
I need to record day and night.
I need to mount them to the ceiling (14’ high).
Cameras need to be reasonably priced.

I read about Mobotix cameras in the forums, but I’m not sure if they will work in such a close area. I’m also pretty sure I’ll be using Blue-Iris to do the recording.

All suggestions or comments will be appreciated.

Mobotix offer a range of 5 camera lenses from a super wide 22mm to a telephoto 135mm so you should find one to meet your requirements. Based on your description either the 22 or 35mm should work. Sadly the 360 degree Q22 is day only so will have no support for night time images... You may also want to consider IR lighting to ensure clear images at night - Raytec offer a PoE Illuminator suitable for smaller distances.

Why spend money on Blue Iris (OK it's cheap as chips) when Mobotix includes free recording software?

If Mobotix are beyond your budget, Acti cameras are pretty good value with built in IR and also come with free software for up to 16 cameras...
