Hello everyone,
I'm new to anything involving security, but I have a new client that is having some trouble with the security system in his store. First, I am a newbie to security, but not to computers (hardware/software).
My client hired me because he thinks it is software related and from what I seen thus far, it might be. I'll explain the problem as much as I can but I do have to protect the identity of my client and his security system.
Basically, this system was setup by Freedom Security of (www.freedomsecurity.net), which is down and from my research, out of business. Anyway, my client was cleaning the PC (which the system is configured on) and accidentally did something. He rebooted the PC and when he went to the security software, it wouldn't display any of the camera feeds.
Here's the curve-ball, my client recently purchased the store (along with the security system) from the previous owner. The security software (Freedom Security) is asking for an admin name and password. My client does not have ANY of the software/manuals and etc for the security system, nor does the previous owner (may be that is why he sold his store, very bad management) have anything, including the admin name and password.
My job is to try to get this security system up and running again without tons of extra cost. Since I have never setup security software before, this is where the experience users of this website comes into play. If I can get the system up and running using the same software, that would be nice but if I HAVE to search for new software, I need help on that too.
The basics of the security system setup is as follow:
9 cameras (may be reduced to 7)
All are connected to a video card in a PC running Windows XP Pro (which serves as the DVR).
The software is Freedom Security 1.0, I believe (I can check for sure if someone know how to setup this particular piece of software).
When I start the Freedom Security software, it brings me to a screen displaying black boxes (which will normally show camera feeds).
Is it because I cannot log into the admin account the reason why I'm not getting any camera feeds?
I thank you all in advance for your help and/or advice.
Frank

With that, I'd dump everything and start over. Tell him it's his good fortune that he "broke" it. Since you don't know anything about what to do beyond that, point him here and walk away.

Seeing that within two days of researching his security system, I now know more about it than he does (and he took over ownership of the store in March); I am more than capable of handling this matter, even though I brand myself a newbie.
He claims the previous owner invested about six to seven thousand on the entire security setup, I don't think he wants to "dump" everything and start over.
I'm guessing that I really would like to be pointed to a piece of security software that would be cost effective and get the job done for 7 to 9 cameras. I'm trying to do a bit more research before I go in and reinstall the software, seeing it may be worth to upgrade to a new system that would have tech support and future patches.
Anyway, thanks for your advice, but I'm choosing not to simply "walk away".

From what very little I found on that company, I'd say it's all bad (the "security" company), as in probably a sham, selling very cheap analog cameras and unsupported (never updated) software. Anyone can put a 5G price tag on a pile of manure and, given enough time or BS sales pitches, find a buyer. (This "security" company is defunct so maybe not enough.). Anyway, if you want to dive into the muck go riiiight ahead. My advice I've already given, free as it was, and you did ask:

I'd also advise your client to at least upgrade the software to something that is current and readilly supportable or he's over a barrel for ongoing support. As for other potential software, you'll need to identify the video capture card in the PC and find out who else (if anyone) supports it in their software.
