I want to set up 2 cameras in my house. I'd prefer wired cameras, POE is a plus. The catch is that I need to able to use a Mac to connect to them. I know I can use Parallels to run Windows but I want to avoid using Parallels.

This is just to watch visitors at the front door. We'll keep a browser window active and view the cameras that way.

Suggestions on cameras to look for? Not cost sensitive but don't really need a lot of features. Thanks for the help.

I would say if you need something that works almost 100% with mac go with Axis. Panasonic, Y cam and sony all tend to rely on windows based technologies such as ActiveX in order to be 100% functional. We have an article on the top 5 security cameras for Mac users if you are interested.

http://www.networkwebcams.com/ip-camera-learning-center/2008/05/22/top-5-home-security-ip-cameras-for-mac-users/

This lists our top 5 IP cameras for mac use and shows their limitations.

Let me know if I can offer any further info.

Thanks. Good list.

Do you think the Panasonic BLC1A would work? I don't have a problem using Windows/Parallels to configure the camera. I just don't want to use a Windows browser to view the video.

You can configure these cameras without any additional software at all. As standard they come on a default IP address or can be assigned using DHCP. then you can just log directly into the camera and adjust any settings from there. If you want to leave the camera on its default IP though I would suggest using a crossover cable to make sure that your router or DHCP controller does not automatically assign it an IP.

You should get a picture with the BL-C1 without any fuss and all your settings will be visible from within the browser interface.

Works great on my internal network. Can even view on my iPhone via Wifi.

Now I have to figure out how to get the UPnP settings to work on my Apple Time Capsule.

Hi Oldskool,

Why do you need uPnP? I've always found in the past that uPnP tends to be a bit unreliable and can mess up regularly. I've always found it's best to set everything manually. That way should signal be lost or something similar, as soon as the connection is restored your equipment still have the correct settings.

I only mention UPnP because that's what the Panasonic documentation refers to.

I was able to get it to work. It wasn't obvious that Port 80 was the port to forward. I tried to let the Panasonic Windows software do the router setup but (not surprisingly) it didn't work with the Time Capsule. I went into the TIme Capsule and manually opened that port. I also took note of my dynamic IP (I'm on DSL). I could connect on my iPhone via 3G using the direct IP address:port. Then I did the same w/ the viewnet.com DynDNS name. Voila, it works.

I also tried the DynDNS on EDGE and it works, albeit slowly. I also tried the direct IP address on my wfie's Blackberry Curve (EDGE) and it works though the browser isn't that great so there's a lot of clicking going.

One thing I'll have to solve is how to get the iPhone browser to keep a cookie w/ my login so I don't have to type it all the time. There's some apps that do that.

I'm good to go.

Excellent information oldskoolboarder!

Just wondering which camera did you buy at the end, where and how much if you don't mind me asking.

I'm looking to do the same thing with my BlackBerry but unfortunately, the network cameras I use require Java Applet or ActiveX which is not supporting by my BlackBerry.

You're a pro I haven't even considered doing the Time Capsule recording. I did however set up the DynDNS properly. It's just the right camera I'm looking for (the ones which can work with an iPhone and BB).

Much thanks for your feedback in advance!

It's the Panasonic BLC1A. Got it on Amazon for a < $100. Good deal IMHO.

I don't think the current Blackberry browser will work well. I've tried the Opera in the past but not that much better. If you are stuck w/ RIM, I'd suggest trying it out on the new Bold or Thunder/Storm. They should have much better browser support, otherwise, you'll take forever to look at the website.

Thanks for the quick reply oldskoolboarder. I do have the new Bold am I'm curious how it works. If the iPhone does work significantly better viewing the camera, that will be a good excuse for us to pick one up.

The Amazon deal sounds sweet. So one can do it all without a PC? I don't even have one at home to set it up!

You need a PC to set it up. You'll also need a home network to use it.

Hooked up the Panasonic BL-C1A, unfortunately, cannot view it on a BlackBerry Bold.
