My question is: If I have 3+ DVR's and ea has 16 standard IR Dome camera's on each. (NOT IP CAMERA'S) and they all run thru/to a Matrix Switcher is it recommended that I run POWER over Ethernet with runs up to 300+ ft with a simple un amplified balum on cat5 on 2 twisted pair ?

OR
shouldnt there be a Siamese or some sort of extrenal to cat5 power provided to secure the life and integrity of the camera.... Keeping in mind that if IR is ever used the voltage demand of the camera then may be sacrificed ??

I am really curious to get multiple amounts of feedback on the issue!!
Thanks

Hi Metrygirl,

Power over Ethernet (PoE) requires the devices at the opposite end, in this case a matrix, to support being powered. I am unaware at present of any such device that will do so. If you are aware of one I would be interested to see.

HiPoE is becomming more mainstream these days which will supply more power and allow devices to use more power for things like PTZ mechanisms or IR lighting as you said.

Standard twisted pair cat 5 is fine for this as the voltage is relatively low.

If I can help any further let me know.
James

With high performance megapixel cameras, video analytics and push technology, the other significant reason for the increase in acceptance of networked systems is that of improved software-driven IP video surveillance management and control systems. These sophisticated programs also allow powerful, mission-specific third party applications such as access control, fire panels, alarm and sensor controls, PoE (Power over internet) systems, visitor management systems and the like to be controlled from a single operating platform, along with the IP video surveillance.

Video technology will greatly reduce the number of video displays required to monitor large scale systems, the number of personnel required to monitor the displays, and the server or recorder capacities needed to record all pertinent action in real-time at full frame rates. These are all contributing factors to further reducing the total cost of ownership for networked systems and incentives to deploy IP-based systems setups.
