It is true IP CCTV has been around for a number of years now and it’s interesting to just pause and consider who is committing to it as their chosen surveillance technology. Megapixel IP security cameras will become the standard for CCTV applications in the future as the market trends and patterns are already developing. Of course there are many other factors that we can debate; bandwidth, storage, cost, compression standards, etc.
But for article one, let us just consider that the analogue versus IP debate should fizzle-out soon simply because analogue CCTV cameras cannot improve significantly on 540TVL resolution; which in turn means that each camera should only view a scene width of 4.4m or 13ft.
The fact is people have greater expectations now, they can do so much with cheap digital stills cameras and their PCs (not to mention what they see via the internet). They are often disappointed with analogue CCTV performance; currently conscientious surveyors, consultants and installers have to take time to brief their clients properly and spend most of that time explaining the limitations of CCTV, what it won’t do, setting realistic expectations, explaining why a camera can only cover a small scene width effectively. In truth there is no way that the public was ever going to persist with VHS VCRs once DVD players became affordable, and in time we will all move on to blu-ray and HDTV, it’s just a matter of price performance ratio.
Somhow it’s interesting to note that more and more of the big system users, with the resources to carry out in-depth trials, and the experience of previous technologies are now preferring the Megapixel IP camera at their sites. Casinos, shopping centres and ports all feature amongst this set of big customers that have switched to IP CCTV.
The unique processing technologies and camera configurations are also extremely cost-effective in that they offer more detailed coverage than as many as 24 conventional surveillance cameras. This, combined with their ability to conserve valuable bandwidth and stream faster, provides numerous additional cost and operational advantages in most field. Images from IP cameras can be cropped to a 16 x 9 aspect ratio and scaled to 1080 or 720p for a true high-definition format. With support for compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE), they deliver full motion progressive scan resolution. This is the new wave!

I hope so. Then the price will come down at the consumer level
there are many megapixel cameras out now, that really are affordable for home market use now. I don't think they push megapixel for home use, because they have so many cmos/ccd cameras in that market now to push.
I love new technology and am willing to wait for the rush to subside and prices drop.
For business and professional use, I can't imagine the price difference should be much of a deterrent. If I had a business, I'd be going with the latest technology. Same as buying a new computer... I'd want to get a few good years use out of it by buying the latest technology.

I don't think they have the technology in Shenzhen to make mega pixel cameras. They seem to think that if they put a different case on last year's cameras, they can call it new.
Maybe it's price point, a 1/4" CMOS 300K pixel sensor probably costs pennies, a 1/2" CMOS 3.1 MP sensor probably costs dollars. They would have to raise the wholesale price of their cameras from $50 to $100 and maybe that's the issue. I know in the U.S., you can get 3.1 MP IP cameras in the $600 price range, so I can't image why they couldn't make the same in Shenzhen in the $100 to $150 price range.

I am now in Shenzhen. We are IP Camera producer. We currently only have 1MP IP Camreas. But there are truly some manufacturers producing 3MP even 5MP IP Cameras in Shenzhen. You can google it and you will see tens of them making 3MP IP Cameras.
And what you said about making 3MP IP Cameras at only $100 or $150, that is impossible. It is not only a cost issue with the sensor. 1/2" CMOS 3.1MP sensor needs good chips to support it then can achieve the function. So what is the price point for a 3 MP camera made in Shenzhen? I know that one made in the U.S. is about $600, in Germany, about $750, Sweden, don't know if they know about 3 MP in Sweden yet, maybe someone should wake up Axis.

As far as I know, the exwork price of 3MP in Shenzhen is around $300~$600 which depends on the qualities and brands. If you are looking for these kind of IP Camera from Shenzhen, I can recommend some of them to you.

At CES in Las Vegas last week, did run into some nice cameras and junk too. I did see one that was 3.1 MP in the $400 price range, but image quality is what I would expect from Chinese made cameras. Sort of like a $100 VGA camera, but at 3.1 MP. Sorry, China has a long way to go to make camera with good optics and sensors.
I did run into one camera company, Stardot that has a very nice sharp picture, like Mobotix but more like Arecont prices. They run about $700-800 including lens for 3 and 5 MP respectively. Also, unlike Arecont, they include their software.
I also ran into a company that had very good image quality in an inexpensive VGA IP camera, but made in Taiwan. A little pricier than what I've seen from Shenzhen, but there is no comparison on the image quality.
The weirdest product I saw from Shenzhen was a bluetooth speakerphone you mount over your steering wheel & airbag. I asked her what would happen if the airbag deployed in an accident, would I have this device permanently embossed in my forehead?
