Hello all,

I am thinking of buying a wireless (for flexibility) IP camera to use as a home security device. I notice that a lot of cameras have the capability to record video (with sound) to a PC hard disk, however:

1. I do not want to leave my PC on 24/7

2. Recording video or images of a burglar is no use to me if they choose to steal the PC where of course the the incriminating evidence is being sent.

I hear that there are cameras on the market that can record images and/or video and then store/upload the data to a website somewhere. I have loads and loads of webspace capacity with a host provider so it would be nice to utilise this storage, with the added bonus that the camera recorded data would be beyond the reach of anyone to remove it. Can anyone confirm that what I have heard is correct and if so, what cameras they would recommend to me and if applicable, how they have fared themselves if they actually have a setup such as I have described. I do not imagine continuous recording but recording prompted by motion detection only (though the facility to be able to do both would be nice!).
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Happy regards,

Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

I have a 4XEM WPTZ and the software they provide will allow me to record remotely. I have the software running on a PC that is not at the same location as the camera. It connects to the camera over the Internet and records all video.

You can do the same thing for securing your home.

Another option is to setup the camera on motion detection. Then when motion is detected it FTP's snapshots to your Webserver.

I think D-Link and Vivotek cameras can do this with their software. All three manufacturers provide the software for free.

There are other software companies that have designed IP Monitoring Software but you are looking to pay for it and sometimes it gets expensive.

I tried the upload solution, but found it was impractical because of limited bandwidth and the high cost of remote storage. However I found a great solution using the SD memory slot in the Panasonic BB-HCM cameras. Your computer does not need to be on, and the camera will still record and store up to 2 GB!

Hello

This is a gratuitous advert, but hopefully relevant to this topic not just a spam posting. We supply Camera Packs to anywhere in the EU, and they include remote recording of images from cameras onto our server, and accessible for playback via private web pages, by PC or mobile phone. You don't need a PC in the property where the camera is.

Prices start at £299 inc VAT ex postage for a FULLY CONFIGURED equipment pack including one wireless indoor Axis 207W camera and one modem/router, then £24.95 per month for automated 24-hour monitoring, off-site image storage, your own web pages, SMS alerts, switching of motion detection on/off via SMS etc. This is our own package written in-house and unique to eyeontheplace.com. We give you everything you need, ready to run, so there's no configuration for you to do.

You can get a free demonstration account by dropping off your details at the eyeontheplace.com website, so you can see for yourself how it all works.

Hope this may be of interest.

Donnie R, make a post on the site and I will answer it Smile

Michael,

Do you design your software? If you do, I could list it under our Software section. There is no fee for doing this, send me an email or PM if you are interested.

Michael,

I have a query regarding eyesonplace.com services. If somebody figures out the IP of my camera and the port to which it is forwaded to then he/she can gain access to my private camera simply by connecting to the IP:port (e.g http://128.128.0.0:91). How do you prevent this breach of privacy?

Regards,
Munish

Most cameras I've worked on have the facility to prevent unauthorised access so provided you enable this and create a secure username and password, all that people should be able get to is a log-in screen with no images...

I too am looking for a stand alone IP camera, and I think the answers here are missing the point. You all mention "Software" that will allow you to remotely access the camera and record, but the recording function is only available while the remote PC is on and talking to the IP camera. I see the DLink DCS-1110 says it will record to a NAS box, and this is as close to stand alone as I've seen. I have yet to purchase a camera to test this, but I would be very interested in finding out about a camera that will record by it's self, and not to a memory card.

Thanks
